2006 District Information Sharing Community

The first District Information Sharing Community (DISC) was held in Washington, D.C. February 23-25, 2005 and the second meeting was held on April 26-28, 2006. Participation in this unique peer-to-peer community is designed to promote relationships among large urban school districts and serves to assist districts in resolving common challenges relating to accessing the general education curriculum for students with disabilities. This service provides a forum for sharing strategies and information, especially regarding improving educational outcomes and access for elementary and middle school students with disabilities.

This webinar, presented by Matthew Press on August 10, 2005, focused on technology interventions that will help children become more effective readers and writers. Topics included universal design strategies and student-specific tools for reading and writing.
Transforming Districts and Schools: A Framework to Guide Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Changes
This webinar, presented by Dr. Elizabeth Kozleski on October 25, 2005, linked data around disproportionality and placement to a framework for culturally responsive and inclusive pedagogy in classrooms and schools. Highlights from the work of the National Institute for Urban School Improvement and the National Center for Culturally Responsive Systems was shared.

During the group’s second meeting, which was held on April 26-28, 2006 in Washington, DC, the participants received an update from the Council for Exceptional Children on education- and disability-related legislation and policy.Â

The DISC members also heard presentations on a Three-Tier Mathematics Intervention Model, a Three-Tier Reading Project, Using an Integrated Systems Model to Address Reading and Behavior Challenges, Improving Learning Outcomes Using Progress Monitoring, Designing Professional Development that Works, and a presentation by Clark County, NV on Inclusive Schools Practices.

Supervising Co-Teaching Teams: Whose Line is it Anyway?
This webinar, presented by Dr. Stacia Rush on January 25, 2006, explored how general educators and special educators view co-teaching, and then how general and special education supervisors can develop a common lens for supporting and evaluating performance.
Using Progress Monitoring in a Response to Intervention Model
This webinar was presented on October 25, 2006 by
Cindy H. Goldsworthy and Joe McFarland from the
Derry Township School District
in Hershey, PA. In the district, all K-5 teachers and students participate in progress monitoring in reading, and beginning this year, progress monitoring will be used with 6-8 grade students who are performing below benchmark. Learn how this district has implemented its progress monitoring model, including how they have trained teachers, communicated with families, used the data collected to make instructional decisions, and improved overall student achievement.
