Strategies for Accessing Algebraic Concepts K-8

Dr. Monya Ruffin and Anthea Medyn of the Access Center presented this webinar, which provided participants with an overview of NCTM standards and the challenges students with disabilities have in learning algebraic concepts. The presenters highlighted various research-based learning and instructional strategies that can be used to help students, including students with disabilities, access algebraic concepts at the K-8 grade levels. Opportunities for interaction and hands-on experiences are incorporated throughout the webinar.

Making Abstract Core Curriculum Accessible to Students with Severe and Multiple Disabilities

If you'd like more information on fostering the skills, strategies and confidence necessary to nurture and empower deaf-blind children, go to DB-LINK—The National Information Clearinghouse on Children Who Are Deaf-Blind. DB-LINK is a federally funded service that identifies, coordinates, and disseminates, at no cost, information related to children and youth from birth through 21 years of age.
For information on how to digitize educational materials, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs has awarded CAST two five-year Cooperative Agreements to establish two national centers to further develop and implement the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS). The NIMAS guides the production and electronic distribution of digital versions of textbooks and other instructional materials so they can be more easily converted to accessible formats, including Braille and text-to-speech.
IDEA and Literacy Instruction

Topics included the characteristics of research-based interventions, essential elements of a response to intervention model, and a discussion of eligibility as a student with a specific learning disability.

Science as Inquiry Through Physical Science

Making Mathematics Meaningful for Students with Learning Problems: Powerful Teaching Strategies that Work

The Strategic Instruction Model: How Learning Strategies and Content Enhancement Routines Help Educators Respond to NCLB

Dr. Jim Knight introduced participants to the Strategic Instruction Model and presented ways to improve achievement for all students. While some students develop learning strategies naturally, others, especially students with disabilities, need explicit instruction to learn and generalize these important skills. Dr. Knight's presentation explains the specifics of the Strategic Instruction Model, how to practically implement it in the classroom, and, more generally, how this will help educators respond to NCLB.
